Chapter 5

The Blade of Shadow and the Space Chickens

Read in Alfie Mode

The Black Dragon’s Foot hovered above a planet wrapped in twilight. Purple clouds swirled across the sky, and below stretched endless fields of glowing bamboo. At the center stood a moonlit dojo, its gates carved with kanji: “Strength in shadows. Courage in silence.”

Charlie’s compass glowed, pointing directly at the dojo. “The Blade of Shadow is here,” he whispered.

Emberwing’s voice echoed faintly in Alfie’s chest:

“The path of shadow is the hardest. Here you face not just ninjas… but yourself.”

The crew filed down the ramp. Mist swirled around their feet, and strange clucks echoed in the distance.

“Uh… was that a chicken?” J.J. asked.

From the mist emerged a flock of… space chickens. Their feathers shimmered like starlight, their eyes glowed bright yellow, and their wings crackled with tiny sparks of cosmic lightning.

“Chickens?” Penny frowned. “Here?”

Alfie laughed. “My school just got some new chickens after foxes ate the old ones. Guess even space has chickens!”

One space chicken strutted forward, wearing a tiny samurai helmet. It clucked three times, then pecked the ground—revealing hidden stepping stones across a dark pool.

Charlie’s eyes widened. “They’re guiding us.”

The Dojo Trial

Inside the dojo, shadows twisted on the walls like living creatures. The Space Ninja Clan appeared, slipping out of the darkness.

Their leader bowed mockingly. “Three blades. One spirit dragon. Hand it over—or be swallowed by shadow.”

Alfie gripped his Fire Blade, the red belt glowing. “Not happening.”

The ninjas attacked. But the space chickens charged first, clucking war cries that echoed like thunder. Their lightning wings zapped ninjas, their beaks pecked stealth cloaks, and their starry feathers blinded the enemy.

“Go chickens!” Eoin shouted, blasting between them with his laser blaster.

The Shadow Duel

In the dojo’s center, the final trial began. Alfie faced a water-like mirror of himself, shaped from shadow. Every kata move Alfie made—Shizuki Ich, Ni, San—the shadow copied perfectly.

“How do I beat me?” Alfie muttered.

Emberwing’s voice echoed:

“To master shadow, you must master patience. Do not fight your reflection—outsmart it.”

Alfie grinned. “Like brushing teeth… boring but it works.”

He slowed his stance, breathed, and then—suddenly changed the rhythm. The shadow faltered, copying too late. Alfie leapt forward, striking with his Fire Blade—SHIZUKI SAN!—and shattered the reflection into sparks.

The dojo floor split, and from the shadows rose a blade—its steel black as midnight, its edge glowing violet.

The Blade of Shadow.

Aftermath

Alfie lifted the blade high. Emberwing’s voice rumbled with pride:

“Fire, Water, Shadow. The last step is near. But beware—ninjas never fight fair.”

As the crew cheered, the samurai-helmeted space chicken hopped onto Alfie’s shoulder and clucked proudly.

Charlie laughed. “Looks like you’ve got a new friend.”

Alfie smiled, stroking its feathery head. “Meet Cluckles. And trust me—foxes don’t stand a chance against this one.”

Everyone laughed as the chickens escorted them back to the ship, lightning sparking in their wings.

But high above the dojo, the ninja leader watched from the shadows, eyes gleaming.

“Enjoy your victory, little warrior. The next trial… will be your last.”
