The volcano’s heat wrapped around the crew like an oven. Lava hissed and boiled below as the pedestal in the caldera glowed brighter. The outline of the Fire Samurai Star Blade shimmered in red flame.
Alfie’s belt pulsed, and Emberwing’s voice rumbled inside his chest:
“To claim the blade, you must master flame and balance… and keep your spirit light.”
“Light?” Eoin asked, visor pinging the ninja shapes darting on the ridges. “What does that mean?”
Nutters suddenly shouted from behind: “GUYS, I FOUND SOMETHING!”
The crew turned to see—sitting strangely out of place on the scorched rock—a giant jumping castle, inflated and wobbling with heat waves. Its towers were shaped like dragons, its slide looked like lava, and its surface shimmered with fiery runes.
Blip Blop scanned it. “Analysis: this is no ordinary bouncy fortress. This is the Trial of Flame’s Balance Castle. Jump, or be burned.”
Penny smirked. “Finally. A challenge I’m good at.”
The Jumping Castle Trial
The ninjas hissed from the shadows but did not attack. Their leader raised a hand, giving permission for the trial to begin. “The castle decides who is worthy.”
One by one, the crew climbed inside.
The floor rippled like jelly. The air smelled of cinnamon fire. A voice whispered from the walls:
“Bounce in rhythm. Fall, and the fire takes you.”
Alfie nodded. “Okay. Kata style. Everyone follow my count.”
He planted his feet, breathed deep, and began bouncing in rhythm: Shizuki Ich—up! Shizuki Ni—land! Shizuki San—strike!
The castle glowed brighter. Lava poured down the slide, but turned into golden sparks when Alfie’s rhythm matched Emberwing’s fire.
Eoin laughed, flipping mid-air as his laser armor shimmered. J.J. followed, nearly tumbling but caught by Charlie’s compass glow. Penny and Laragh whipped their braids to keep everyone balanced, like glowing ropes. Even Skull Fire—clunky and grumbling—managed a surprisingly graceful belly-bounce.
But the ninjas weren’t done. They leapt onto the castle from the ridges, silent shadows bouncing between the crew. Their movements were sharp, threatening to break the rhythm.
Alfie’s eyes blazed. “No! This is OUR trial!”
He leapt high, red belt burning bright. His jump shook the whole castle—but instead of collapsing, the runes flared, blasting the ninjas backward into the ash.
The blade on the pedestal shimmered fully into form: a katana with flame licking along its edge.
Alfie landed, perfectly balanced, and bowed to the glowing sword. The flames wrapped around his hand, then cooled into a hilt of steel.
He had claimed the Blade of Fire.
The Warning
As the crew cheered, Emberwing’s voice echoed again:
“One blade is yours. Two remain. But beware—the ninjas do not play by the castle’s rules.”
The Space Ninja leader melted into shadow, his voice slicing the air:
“Enjoy your little toy. The next blade—Water—will drown your spirit.”
With a hiss of smoke, they vanished into the sky.
Alfie looked at the Fire Blade glowing in his hands.
“We’re ready for whatever’s next.”
Captain Skull Fire cracked his knuckles. “Then let’s bounce to the next battle.”
Nutters yelled, “BEST. CASTLE. EVER!” and launched himself out of the lava-slide in a shower of sparks.
Everyone laughed—even Alfie, who felt Emberwing’s warmth curl tighter around his heart.
