Chapter 16

When Shima Learned More (and the Base Found Itself)

Chapter 16 illustration
Read in Alfie Mode

Read with curiosity… because learning can be noisy… and discoveries don’t always knock.

That afternoon, when the classroom finally emptied, Shima hovered beside Alfie’s desk.

It glowed softly.
Not copying.
Watching.

“I think,” Alfie whispered, “it wants to learn more.”

Shima rippled in agreement and slowly shaped itself into letters in the air:

WHY

Alfie smiled.
“That’s a good question.”

He showed Shima small things first.

How to line up quietly.
How to wait for the bell.
How to tie shoelaces without copying them inside-out.

Shima tried.
Messed up.
Tried again.

Each time, it glowed a little brighter.

From Base Alfie, Mixie whispered through the comm-link,
“LEARNING IS HAPPENING AND I AM PROUD AND SLIGHTLY GASSY.”

That’s when Mixie discovered his new side effect.

💨 poot 💨

The sound was tiny.

But the result wasn’t.

A trail of glittery arrows appeared in the air, pointing exactly where Mixie was thinking.

“UH OH,” Mixie whispered.
“MY FARTS NOW SHOW MY IDEAS.”

Chimichanga gasped.
“That is… extremely unhelpful.”

Mixie tried again.
💨 pffft 💨

More arrows appeared—this time pointing straight at the floorboard.

“WAIT,” Mixie said slowly.
“THE BASE.”

Too late.

That night, as the team whispered inside the secret base, something rolled across Alfie’s bedroom floor.

Whrrrrrr.

A small, round shape bumped into the bed.

Whrrrrrr.

It nudged the rug.

Then—
CLICK.

The loose floorboard lifted.

Everyone froze.

A little robot vacuum rolled to the edge, its light blinking happily.

“CLEANING COMPLETE,” it beeped.

Silence.

The robot looked down into the base.

The rival team gasped.
The jelly creature hid behind a box.
The gremlin whispered, “PLAY DEAD?”

The robot vacuum scanned.

It saw Chimichanga.
Mixie.
The rivals.

And Shima… glowing gently.

“NEW DUST CATEGORY DETECTED,” the robot announced.

Mixie slapped his forehead.
“IT FOLLOWED MY IDEA ARROWS.”

Before panic could begin—

FLASH

A faint flaming skull symbol appeared on the inside of the floorboard.

A calm feeling washed over Alfie.

A secret sign from
**Captain Skullfire.

No words.
Just reassurance.

Alfie stepped forward.

“Hey,” he said gently to the robot.
“This place is… not dusty.”

The robot paused.

Shima drifted closer and copied Alfie’s calm voice.

“NOT… DUSTY,” Shima echoed.

The robot beeped again.

“RECLASSIFYING,” it said.
“STATUS: SECRET.”

It slowly backed away.

Whrrrrrr.
Floorboard closed.

Quiet returned.

Mixie exhaled.
💨 tiny poot 💨
Glitter arrows appeared… pointing to his mouth.

“I WILL NOT THINK LOUDLY ANYMORE,” he whispered.

Shima shimmered happily.

It had learned something important:

Not everything needed copying.
Some things needed understanding.

Alfie lay back, heart steady.

Tomorrow, Shima would want to learn even more.

And the secret base?

Well…

It wasn’t invisible anymore.

But it was still safe.

For now.
