Read quietly… like you’re sharing a secret.
Morning came like it always did.
Sunlight through the window.
Birds outside.
Normal sounds.
Too normal.
Alfie sat up in bed and froze.
Because only he could see it.
A thin, wiggly shimmer hung in the air near his wardrobe.
Not bright.
Not scary.
Just… wrong.
Like heatwaves indoors.
Dad walked past the door.
“Breakfast in five, mate.”
“Okay!” Alfie said.
Dad didn’t see it.
Chimichanga peeked out from under the blanket.
“I see it,” he whispered bravely. “And I am scared but upright.”
Mixie slid down the pillow.
“I SEE IT AND I AM YELLING QUIETLY.”
The shimmer pulsed once.
Blip.
Alfie felt it in his chest.
“This is the problem,” he said.
“It’s here… but it doesn’t want grown-ups.”
The rival team gathered behind him.
The jelly creature squished thoughtfully.
“That’s rude.”
The robot clapped once.
Too loud.
“SECRET BASE!” Mixie shouted.
“Shhh!” everyone said.
🕵️ THE SECRET BASE
They moved fast.
Under the bed? Too dusty.
Behind the wardrobe? Too squeaky.
Then Alfie lifted a loose floorboard Dad didn’t even know about.
Underneath—
A perfect space.
Old boxes.
Cushions.
A torch.
And just enough room for heroes.
“This,” Alfie declared, “is Base Alfie.”
Everyone cheered silently.
The rival team squeezed in.
The gremlin bumped his head.
“Worth it.”
They watched the shimmer through a tiny gap.
It slowly crawled toward Alfie’s school bag.
“Uh oh,” said Chimichanga.
“That bag holds homework.”
Suddenly—
✨ FLASH ✨
A symbol burned briefly on the wall of the secret base.
A flaming skull.
Calm.
Familiar.
Only Alfie could see it clearly.
A warm voice echoed softly in his head:
“Stay patient.
Watch carefully.
Not everything dangerous looks loud.”
It was a secret sign from
entity["fictional_character","Captain Skullfire","children's book character"].
Alfie nodded, heart steady.
“I know,” he whispered.
“I’m ready.”
The shimmer reached the school bag.
The zip moved by itself.
Mixie gasped so hard he farted quietly.
💨 poot 💨
Nothing exploded.
Good sign.
Alfie leaned closer.
Inside the bag…
something glowed.
Not bad.
Not good.
Just… new.
The shimmer slipped inside and vanished.
Silence.
Everyone waited.
Then the bag gently zipped itself shut.
“Well,” said Mixie.
“That’s rude AND mysterious.”
Alfie smiled.
Whatever it was…
it was coming to school.
And only he would notice.
The symbol on the wall faded, leaving one last message:
“First real-world test begins now.”
Alfie picked up his bag.
“Okay team,” he said.
“Stay hidden. Stay ready.”
Chimichanga saluted.
“I will guard the base. Mostly.”
Mixie grinned.
“ADVENTURE AT SCHOOL.”
And Alfie stepped out into the normal day…
Knowing it wasn’t normal at all.
⭐ To Be Continued…

the secret gets closer.
